Secondhand Screen Time and Addiction

Tech

I have been studying the impact of screen time and screen addiction for about a year. This article by FastCompany.com (This article is republished from The Conversation.) supports what I have learned about screen time and addiction.

The article, Secondhand Screen Time May be Just as Dangerous as Secondhand Smoke, has a compelling argument about babies seeing the habit of screen time by watching their parents. It also explores the possible consequences of too much screen time.

The article posted in nzherald.co.nz shares research about the hazards of too much screen time, “Children as young as two are developing mental health problems because of smartphones and tablets, scientists warn.”

The opinions about screen time and it’s negative effect on babies seems to be agreed upon across the globe. There are a handful of people who encourage gaming with children but generally not children younger than two years old.

Flying Cars, The Jetsons, and Me (someday)

Tech

One of the things that has always fascinated me and intrigued me is flying cars. Maybe it’s from watching too much of the Jetsons.

Of course, I don’t have to worry about air traffic…

or policing the friendly skies.

I just get to dream about cool designs of flying cars…

read about the predictions of when it could happen…

What’s more fancy than a Porsche? A flying Porsche. Luxury automakers race to perfect the flying car November 27, 2019

…And think about the lucky chap who gets to start the first flying car taxi service.

What I do know is that flying car designs and their predictions have improved a lot in the last 20 years.

Do you have a favorite car design? What intrigues, scares you or concerns you about flying cars?

Favorite Holiday – Free Flight Day

Talk

Alright, it isn’t a holiday to most people but my kids love it as much as Christmas. We look forward to it every year.

What is it? Free flight day is when pilots offer their knowledge, time, and planes to take children, ages 8 to 17 on a free 20 minute flight. The children receive ground training, check the in-flight training (They chat with the pilot.), and a logbook to record their air time.

Many small airports offer this experience through the Young Eagles. Finding the day it is offered at a small airport near you is the tricky part. My children have experienced Free Flight Day in Puyallup, WA (at Thun Field), in McMinnville, Oregon, and in Independence, Oregon. Every experience we have had with Free Flight Day has been a positive experience.

You can try looking at the Young Eagles Find a Flight Webpage for their next free flight day or try looking at the website of an airport near you.

Parents do have to stay at the airport and sign waivers for the children to go on the flights. You can get an idea of what the event is like and what the forms look like here: http://infiniteaircenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Young-Eagles-Form.pdf

Sometimes there can be a line, which means a wait. Get there early and take some snacks with you. If you are inclined to make a day of it, most of the airports have a restaurant near the airfield.

One more thing, sometimes it can get cold in the plane or while you wait; take a light weight sweatshirt or coat. Make sure you remember your camera!

Lost Lake – Mt Hood National Forest

Lost Lake is beautiful. How can you go wrong when it is located in the Columbia River Gorge and near Mt Hood? It is incredibly scenic country. It is beautiful year-round, true to Western Oregon, some months have more precipitation than other months. These images were taken at Lost Lake Resort. We were enjoying the Day Use Area. (There is a parking fee.) It would be a great place to camp or stay in the cabins or yurts. We did not stay over night so I can not comment about Lost Lake Resort. I can tell you that it is an enjoyable and gorgeous place to enjoy nature.

There are several Lost Lakes in Oregon. This Lost Lake is off of I-84 in the Columbia River Gorge near Mt Hood in the Mt Hood National Forest. If you plan a trip to Lost Lake you also might consider the Hood River County Fruit Loop. The produce in this area is phenomenal!

Favorite Hikes – Oneonta Falls

Images

Oneonta Falls Trail is river hike, meaning the only way to the lower falls is to hike up the river. It is a short popular hike (0.6 miles round trip) located in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. It is a beautiful hike, especially enjoyable during the summer.

I include these pictures not necessarily because they are flawless but because I don’t know when I can (legally) do this hike again. Due to the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017 this river hike is now closed. This has made the images more valuable to me.

About Me and Images

I started photography when I was in high school and I needed an elective. My Mom encouraged me to enroll in the class, which means she mentioned it daily. (I love you, Mom!) While I was in high school I learned how to process film and use a dark room. I have appreciated this background in photography. While in high school, toting around a camera allowed me privileges. Take pictures at sporting events? Here is a sidelines pass. These opportunities and my increasing knowledge of photography increased my self-confidence. My camera proved to be a great travel companion when I went to Mexico as an exchange student during my senior year.

I continued studying photography through college. I worked in the college’s photography lab and went to Germany, Holland, and London as a photographer for one of the college’s traveling dance teams. I also spent several days in Yellowstone helping teach Senior Citizens photography. Photography gave me the opportunity to have paid travel experiences. My knowledge and understanding of people, cultures, and geography increased as I explored the world with my camera. I graduated with an Associates degree with a major in Photography.

After school I got married and started having children. Of course, children are great to photograph. I started to miss creativity (beyond having five children). I started photographing weddings, families, babies, and high school seniors. I met more great people and found more great places to take pictures. My sister and I worked together to learn about digital cameras and Photoshop. I learned about layers and file sizes. I made mistakes and I learned from them. I really appreciate not having to store and take care of film and negatives. (I still have a film camera.)

While I was going through divorce and grieving the loss of what I thought would be my happily ever after. I picked up my camera and received strength, passion, and joy in remembering who I am . My first love will always be the me I found while studying, exploring, and growing in photography.

I continued studying and earned a Bachelors degree in Digital Technology and Culture. What is that? It has to do with all things related to the web and culture associated with the web. I love that it enabled my to continue to study design and photography. I also added coding (I can do it but it isn’t really my thing.), web design, editing audio, electronic music, and video to my photography habit. Come to find out it wasn’t that easy to get a job…until I learned about Instructional Design.

I am currently working on a Masters of Science in Education with a major in Information Technology. I love learning about Instructional Design. It takes the things I enjoy, puts them in a package, and ties it with a creative bow.

The photography adventures continue.

About Me

Images, Talk, and Tech is a work in progress. The images section shares my love for photography and images. It isn’t necessarily about technical mastery, it’s more about images that I enjoy. The talk section is just that. It is what I would talk about or information I would share with my family and friends. There isn’t any rhyme or reason. It may have recipes one day and information about a favorite event another day. The tech fuels my interest in technology, the joys of tech, my studies, and perhaps my concerns with tech.

I have five children. I have gained knowledge in the process of being raised by five children. I have no doubt that some of that wisdom (bahaha) and the experiences will flow through these posts. One thing that should never be doubted is the love I have for my children. I can proudly state that the mother bear inside of me has a tiny corner cave of honor in my heart. Her spot has been earned and she stays.

Why am I doing this? Honestly, I probably wouldn’t except I get to for a school project. So, I figure I might as well jump. In addition, I find that my children call at different times and ask the same questions. “What is the lasagna recipe?” “Where did we go camping that one time?” So, I hope this will be a central location to answer some of their questions and serve as a reminder for myself. (For some reason, I can never remember the name of Oneanta Falls, even though I loved the hike.)

I ask that good manners are observed in this space. I will happily delete objectionable posts.

I do not enjoy intense political debates. – Please share those thoughts with someone who will appreciate it more than I will.

I do enjoy positive humor, laughter, kindness, banter, and encouraging suggestions.
